"This recipe is based on one of Rocco Dispirito’s from his book, Now Eat This! Diet. He says in its intro, “Who grew up eating tuna casserole? Raise your hands. That’s just about everybody. Okay, this is not your mother’s tuna casserole…nor does it use Tuna Helper. But it does taste just as wonderful – without losing any of its comfort-food flavor. I’ve wowed it up a bit with Dijon mustard, and I used whole wheat panko bread crumbs for that traditional crunchy topping. If you can’t find these particular bread crumbs, you can always toast leftover whole wheat bread and break it into crumbs with a rolling pin.” I made this the other night with French’s French Fried Onions because I was out of panko bread crumbs. We loved this dish and it has become a new staple dish for us. Per serving: 351 calories, 10g fat (5g sat / 1g mono / 0.5g poly), 64mg cholesterol, 589mg sodium, 34g carbohydrate, 6g fiber, 36g protein. This calculates to 9 WeightWatchers Points Plus value. He says you can save 31 calories per serving by omitting the peas. Before his update, the classic tuna casserole has 28 fat grams and 826 calories – thank you, Rocco! :)"

*Made for Australia/NZ Swap #55* I should have realized from the ingredients that this would be very mild. I prepared this according to directions with the exception of subbing artisan Taco cheese blend for cheddar. Not too flavorful the first night, but made a large quantity for 2. Tonight. I took 1/2 of the leftovers and added 3 Tbsp. melted butter with 2 tsp. crushed garlic and 1/2 T. seasoned salt, and covered with shredded extra sharp cheddar, and warmed in a 350* oven for 20 minutes. MUCH more flavor ! Will add same to the last for another night. Thanks for posting, Mersaydees.

This was a simple, lower calorie casserole to put together. I only used 10 ounces of tuna and increased the pasta to the full 12 ounce box. So my casserole was not as creamy but still very tasty. Made for Please Review My Recipe 2012

I loved this take on tuna casserole! You couldn't tell it was made with lighter ingredients at all. I liked the tang from the dijon mustard, but my husband didn't care for that as much. I wouldn't change a thing about this except maybe just leave the breadcrumbs off next time. Thanks for posting! Made for Photo Tag.

We really loved this tuna dish, & the only changes I made were to use 2 cups of peas & 1/2 teaspoon of lemon pepper along with a pinch of salt! Will be making this one again, I know! Thanks for posting the recipe! [Made & reviewed for one of my group mates in the current Aus/NZ Recipe Swap]

This casserole is delicious and perfectly seasoned for my taste. I didn't have whole wheat rotini so used tri-colour rotini instead, used fat-free yogurt and regular cheddar cheese, and topped it with a mixture of French-fried onions (I was really surprised to find these at my grocer!) and regular panko. It reheats really well. I will definitely make this yummy dish again!
