Northeast Alberta Street has become one of Portland's most funky and creative neighborhoods. Shops of handcrafted items and artsy boutiques mix with older stores and import goods like Green Bean Books the perfect children's bookstore, Digs Inside and Out a meet home the decor shop, and Trade Up music store. Food choices range from trendy pubs and hip cafes to traditional taquerias and food carts. Though there are only a few dedicated galleries, the area is perfused with art, much of it being of the outsider variety. Most of the shops and restaurants adorn their walls with rotating shows of local artists. Alberta Street celebrates on Last Thursday, with an art walk that is also a raucous street fair.

Catering to hip professionals and trendy city denizens, this area is one of Portland's busiest. It features fashionable clothing and home store chains, including Eddie Bauer and Pottery Barn, Williams and Sonoma, and also includes a wealth of smaller, independent shops. Great restaurants including Papa Hayden's and Casa del Matador are here. There is also a slew of coffee houses and everything from stylish clothing venues and music shops can also be found. The boutiques found along NW 23rd offer a variety of goods because no two shops are remotely the same. Great turn-of-the-century architecture and beautiful landscaping add to the neighborhood's appeal.

In the early part of the 20th century, this area was dedicated to industry and commerce. In the last few decades, the original warehouses have been converted into art galleries, trendy restaurants, brewpubs, hip shops and boutiques. Pearl, named for the beauty inherent in the unsightly exteriors, is an apt moniker for this reinvented district, which is now one of the city's more desirable destinations. It's especially popular on the first Thursday of each month when local galleries fling open their doors until late and patrons wander through the neighborhood, adding vibrancy to the already-bustling streets. The area is bounded by the Willamette River, I-405, West Burnside and NW Broadway.

A diverse and inclusive neighborhood, Hawthorn is the kind of place a lot of people envision when they think of Portland. There is definitely a hippy, alternative, gay-friendly ethos in the area. This is reflected in the vintage clothing shops, boutiques and independent cafes. Powell's books has a branch here which is now the largest bookstore on Portland's East Side. The Bagdad Theater is a popular McMenimin's location, and several pubs offer nightly live music. One of the most laid-back neighborhoods, Hawthorn is a great place to spend an day browsing through the stores. Stop for lunch at one of the local favorites like The Cup and Saucer Cafe and then grab desert at Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream.

Adorned with public art and fountains, this vibrant area is pedestrian-friendly and a center for shopping and business. Pioneer Courthouse Square is a focal point for the area, which features a mix of department stores including a massive Ross store, a Nordstrom Rack, and the flagship Nike store. This area also features tons of independent shops including many wonderful little boutiques. Impressive hotels, top-rated restaurants and many of the city's arts institutions are also located in this district. Generally, the downtown area is considered to be between 13th Avenue and the Willamette River (east to west), Burnside and Jackson Streets (north to south).

Woodburn Company Stores is the largest tax-free outlet mall in the western part of the United States and the largest outlet in the state of Oregon. The outlet is located off of I-5 in Woodburn, OR. It's around a 20-minute drive south from Portland before you get to Salem. This outlet has many stores including Coach Factory, J.Crew, Kenneth Cole Company Store, The North Face, Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren, Cole Haan, Adidas, Ann Taylor, Columbia Sportswear, Under Armour, Esprit, The Children's Place, White House | Black Market, Banana Republic Factory Store, American Eagle Outfitters, Tommy Hilfiger, The Gap & more.

Oregon's largest mall is located in the busy Lloyd District neighborhood. Much of standard mall fare is found here, though with a slight urban edge. A large ice skating rink occupies the center swath of the two-story building's lower level. Anchor stores include Macy's and Sears. Other shops found here are Barnes & Noble, Icing, Made in Oregon, Ulta, the Children's Place, Old Navy, Gap, Forever 21 and many more. The top-level hosts a large food court and across the street is a cinema multiplex showing the latest movie releases. In all, over 200 shops can be found in the Lloyd Center.

Bridgeport Village is a lovely, sprawling outdoor mall that features a mix of local shops and nationwide retailers. Be sure to wear your walking shoes, because there is a lot of places to visit here. At Bridgeport Village, you can find popular stores like Anthropologie, BCBG, lulumon Athletica, J. Crew, The Apple Store, Urban Outfitters, Crate and Barrel, the Container Store, White House Black Market, and many more. Bridgeport Village is also home to popular restaurants like the California Pizza Kitchen and PF Changs. One of Portland's most popular food carts has a permanent location here, Koi Fusion. This mall has a large theater as well. Children will enjoy the playground located near PF Changs.

Including four department stores, with one being the state's largest Nordstrom, Washington Square Mall draws patrons with its wealth of shopping opportunities and diverse merchandise. Over 170 specialty stores also call this landmark mall home. They have one of the only Brighton Jewelry Stores in Portland and the only Cheesecake Factory. Kids will love the Lego store and moms will love the rest. Names like Pottery Barn, Abercrombie & Fitch and J. Crew keeps shoppers happily filling up their bags (and emptying their wallets) until the doors close. A large food court and an expansive parking structure with a sky bridge to Nordstrom and Sears are convenient.

Pioneer Place is located in the heart of downtown Portland near Pioneer Courthouse Square. This is downtown's primary shopping destination, spanning four city blocks and housing designer name brands and top quality dining and entertainment options. Anchor stores include H&M and Tiffany & Co.; smaller high-end retailers include Ann Taylor, Coach, Eddie Bauer, J. Crew and Nine West. This mall features a brand new Microsoft store. Unfortunately, you will most likely have to park in a parking garage to go to this mall. There is no free parking available. Mall services include strollers, wheelchairs, a visitor's information center and an on-site ATM.
